This beautiful vintage postcard from 1900, shows Downtown Pittsburgh with the corner of Fifth Avenue and Wood Street during a busy day. One can see the people in Victorian dress along the sidewalks, with the Pittsburgh Trolley Cars moving through the streets.
This view of Pittsburgh is particularly bright and pretty as many of the old images of the downtown area are very dark, due to the amount of soot in the air from the Pittsburgh mills. In fact, many old pictures of Pittsburgh look as if it were night when it is actually mid-day.
As this vintage postcard shows, the downtown streets were once criss-crossed with street car lines for the famous Pittsburgh Trolley Cars that were a part of Pittsburgh transportation until 1985. Today, downtown Pittsburgh is still a bustling metropolis but the trolley cars have been replaced by buses.
